Jobs For Vets

From Mayor Brown:

Last Friday I unveiled the City of Jacksonville's Jobs For Vets website. This is a unique opportunity to help connect our nation's heroes with educational opportunities and career information to ease the transition into civilian life.

Jobs For Vets comes at no cost to the taxpayer because of a strong public-private partnership among City Hall, the Jacksonville Military Veterans Coalition and more than 30 local CEOs and business leaders. Jobs For Vets is testament to Jacksonville's longstanding commitment to create America's most military friendly city.

The men and women who served our military took on a tremendous amount of personal risk because of their dedication to preserving our nation's safety. They also learned a number of specialized skills and developed a refined sense of discipline that would serve many employers well. That's why the mission of Jobs For Vets is twofold: We're establishing a one-stop-shop for veterans to learn about the region's employers and for the region's employers to become better educated about what military-trained folks can offer the workforce.

Please take a moment to review the website by clicking www.coj.net/JobsForVets . Pass the information on to family and friends. Help me spread the word to all veterans – and employers – who may benefit from Jobs For Vets.

Sincerely,

Alvin Brown

Mayor

USA-Scotland set to break all-time attendance record for soccer match in Jacksonville

USA-SCOTLAND SET TO BREAK ALL-TIME ATTENDANCE
RECORD FOR SOCCER MATCH IN JACKSONVILLE, FLA.

20,000 Tickets Already Sold for May 26 Match at EverBank Field

CHICAGO (April 3, 2012) – More than 20,000 tickets have been sold for the U.S. Men's National Team game against Scotland on May 26 at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla.

Ticket sales to date already have surpassed the previous Jacksonville soccer attendance record set on Aug. 11, 1981, when 18,088 witnessed the Jacksonville Tea Men take on the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the first year of North American Soccer League action at the Gator Bowl.

The match kicks off at 8 p.m. ET and will be televised live on NBC Sports Network.

Tickets starting at $22 are on sale at ussoccer.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 and at all Ticketmaster ticket centers throughout the Jacksonville area (including many Walmart stores). Groups of 20 or more can obtain an order form at ussoccer.com or call 312-528-1290.

Ultimate Fan Tickets (special VIP packages that include a premium ticket, a custom made official U.S. National Team jersey with name and number, VIP access to the field before and after the game, and other unique benefits) also are available exclusively through ussoccer.com.

The USA's game in Jacksonville will be its first in the city in more than a decade, with the last match representing one of the biggest upsets in U.S. history. On Feb. 6, 1999, the MNT defeated defending European Champion Germany 3-0 in front of 17,259 fans, the previous attendance record for a U.S. match in Jacksonville.

The U.S. holds an all-time 1-3-2 record against Scotland and last played the team to a 1-1 tie in Glasgow on Nov. 12, 2005.

The Jacksonville game will be the first meeting on American soil between the sides since May 30, 1998, when the teams tied 0-0 in Washington, D.C.

After playing Brazil on May 30 in Landover, Md., and Canada on June 3 in Toronto, the U.S. will return to Florida to open the Semifinal Round of FIFA World Cup Qualifying against Antigua & Barbuda on June 8 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

Jacksonville's First 'Cash Mob' Saturday April 7th.

Please join Mike Field and posse and encourage your friends to come to Jacksonville's first Cash Mob Saturday April 7th.   Meetup at Burrito Gallery at 1pm to find out what location we'll be mobbing.  Expect to spend a minimum of $10.  Afterwards beginning at 2:30pm we'll meet back at Burrito Gallery for drinks and socializing.  Support two local businesses at once!!!

What is a cash mob?  Well, it's good kind of mob for your city.  More specifically a cash mob is a group of people who assemble at a local business and all buy items from that business. The purpose of these mobs is to support both the local businesses and the overall community.  Think of the Cash Mob as a "shop local" flash mob created to spur local economic stimulus!  The ten dollars demonstrates your personal commitment and effort to support a local independent retailer while having fun doing it as a part of a larger group.

The first Cash Mobs sprung up in Buffalo and Cleveland around the same time last fall.  The organizers intent was to provide a financial and morale boost to a local business owner while giving the Mobbers the opportunity to meet new people during the events.  Now it's Jacksonville's turn to show our dedication to our local economy on April 7th.

There are three rules for a cash mob:

1.  Spend $10-$20 at a local store

2.  Meet three new people

3.  HAVE FUN!!!

When we buy local, from local businesspeople, wealth is both created and retained in the community.  When we shop local, it is as much about making an investment in our communities and economies as it is about getting things we normally would have bought elsewhere.

Here are some quotes from merchants who participated in recent Cash Mobs

"We did the equivalent of a Christmas shopping day in 45 minutes."

- John Reburn, in Roanoke, Virginia

"We saw an over 600% increase in transactions from the previous weekend, over doubling of the recommended purchase of $10 in goods, and over 135 visitors."

- Peggy Winfield, in Mt Clements, MI

Think of what an impact we can all have on our community by simply choosing to shop local.

Please spread the word and join us Saturday April 7th 1pm at Burrito Gallery located at 21 East Adams Street in downtown Jacksonville, FL.  As always, on street metered parking is FREE on the weekends!

Follow us on twitter @jaxcashmob or on Facebook Facebook.com/jaxcashmob

Jax Cash Mob will invade a local business with customers for an hour.  You will have the opportunity to buy cool stuff(the secret location is a really cool place), support local business downtown, have fun in the urban core and meet cool people.

Meet at Burrito Gallery at 1pm.  The cash mob location will be unveiled.  We'll spend $10-20 at the location, and after an hour or so come back to Burrito Gallery for socializing and post-mob drinks.

This trend is sweeping the nation as more and more people realize the value of supporting local businesses.
